The carpal tunnel is the area between the bone and the ligaments of the wrist through which the median nerve passes.

• Carpal tunnel syndrome may be caused by a range of activities that produce inflammation to the area compressing the median nerve, such as: typing, handwriting, sewing, using hand tools (especially if they vibrate), assembly-line work, sports (holding racquets), driving, etc.

• Function of the median nerve:
• It supplies sensation to the thumb-side of the palm, and to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the thumb-side of the ring finger
• Helps with the movement of part of the hand.

Signs and symptoms

Parasthesia, tingling sensations, pain or numbness in the hand, worse at night, weakness in the grip and clumsiness in the hand, pain in the wrist, forearm and can go up the shoulder.
